A War Bond campaign by the American Women's Voluntary Services (A.W.V.S.) Berkerley Chapter was launched in November 1943 to purchase a pursuit bomber. One such aircraft had already been purchased by the organisation and named "A.W.V.S. Santa Barbara" and the aim of the campaign was to ultimately provide funding for at least seven aircraft at $75,000 each.
