Believed to be the first ambulance plane purchased by War Bonds, equipped for medical evacuation duties and assigned to the India-China region. It served with the 803rd Medical Air Evacuation Transport Squadron from late 1943 until hostilities ended.
On the right side this C47 also carried the title of "Smilin Jack", the comic strip aviator created by Zack Mosley in 1933. The character lasted for 40 years in the Chicago Tribune -- somewhat longer than the plane itself.
