(Heavy) Sudbury, England
LIBRA B-24H-15-FO 42-52508 Assigned to England on
26th March 1944 and flown as "K-King" with 486BG. It completed 22 missions with the group
to targets ranging from rail yards and airfields to oil refineries and V-weapon sites.
Twelve of these missions were flown under the command of Lt Foy and his crew but its final
sortie on 12th July (the 13th trip for the Foy crew) had to be aborted due to a
mechanical failure. After the 486BG converted to B17s, "Libra" was modified for
night operations, re-designated
as a B-24-HNT-15-FO and transferred to 492nd Bomb Group for special operations.
Surviving hostilities in this clandestine role, "Libra" was flown back to the
USA on 8th July 1945 under the command of Lt Overstreet, 492BG.
